William CLEVELAND 1798 - 1868
Born November 4, 1798 in South Carolina, OR Habersham County, Georgia to parents Jeremiah and Nancy Helen Clark Cleveland.
At the time William was born, the family consisted of his parents Jeremiah and Nancy, and siblings James age 10, John age 8, Siletta age 6, Sarah Helen age 4, and Jefferson age 2.
When William was barely two years old, his mother Nancy died.
At some point his father Jeremiah married again, to Martha Smith, and had several additional children with her.
William, at age 21, married Isabella Morris, age 20, on July 29, 1819 in Pendleton County, South Carolina. Isabella "Eba" MORRIS was born May 20,1799, Randolph County, NC of parents Jordan & Elizabeth WASHBURN MORRIS.
William and Isabella's first son, John Clark, was born March 9, 1820 in Habersham County, Georgia{3}
Then on December 21, 1822, William Jasper CLEVELAND was born in Pendleton District, SC. Soon after William Jasper's birth, the family moved to Georgia for 10 years{2}.
Their next three children were born in Georgia. First Louallen was born on December 27, 1823 in Rabun Co., GA. This child died three months later on March 9, 1824. When another boy was born a couple years later on 14 June 1826 in Habersham County, Georgia, they chose the name Louallen again. Three years later, Mary Ann was born on July 13, 1829.{3}
Sometime in 1832, William and Isabella started moving the family to Missouri, staying about two years (1832-1834) in Alabama. Another son, Martin Van Buren Cleveland, was born November 20, 1833, in Alabama, near Wetumkeh, GA.{3}
Four more children were later born in McDonald County, Missouri: Martha E., born August 20, 1836; Nancy H., born November 27, 1839; Lucinda A., born November 27, 1842; and James K Polk, born August 11, 1844.{3}
In 1847, son William Jasper married Tennessee OWEN, possibly in McDonald County, Missouri.
The 1850 Federal Census for District 53, McDonald County, Missouri lists William Cleavland, age 52, Farmer, bp SC with wife Eba, age 51, bp Georgia; son Van Buren age 17 bp Alabama; daughters Martha E. age 14, Nancy H. age 9, and Lucinda A. age 8, all born in Missouri; and son James K Polk age 7, bp Missouri.
William and Isabella (Morris) CLEVELAND are said to have migrated with a 1st Baptist Congregation to Ukiah, CA in the 1850s. According to a Mendocino County, California History, William and Isabella moved their family to Butte County, CA with their son William Jasper and his family in 1856.
In 1860 William and Isabella returned to Missouri.
William CLEVELAND died in 1868 in Knolenoslar, Johnson Co., Missouri at the age of 70 years.{3}
Isabella then returned to California, where she is found in the 1870 Federal Census in Ukiah, Mendocino County, CA at age 70 living with daughter Lucy Jane Cleaveland age 27.
In 1880 the Federal Census shows Isabel Cleveland, age 81, living with son Martin V. Cleveland and his family in Ukiah.
Isabella Cleveland died 4 May 1888 in Ukiah, Mendocino County, CA and is buried in the Ukiah Cemetery.
